Kirchborchen Steinkiste (1) submitted by Andreas : Kirchborchen (1): view into the partly overgrown chamber (Vote or comment on this photo)
This late neolithic tomb at Kirchborchen is situated east of the street "An den Steinkisten". The chamber is about 21 meters long and about 3 m wide. It's oriented Northeast-Southwest.

The entrance, an oval so-called Seelenloch ("Soul Hole") is at the southeastern long side. It's situated under the ground level, so it can't be seen.

Most of the supporting stones have been preserved. But just one capstone has remained.

Grave additions were food, beverages, adornment, arms and tools.

The tombs at Kirchborchen most probably have been built about 3400-3000 BC, like most of the gallery graves of eastern Westphalia and nothern Hesse. They are related to the late neolithic Wartberg culture.

Kirchborchen Steinkiste (1) submitted by Martin_L : Detail of gallery graves' central part. The main part of the 21m by 3m chamber is situated below ground level. While most orthostats are preserved only one capstone survived historic destruction. It is partly fallen and as an unnecesary act of official vandalism a "monument" sign has been attached (with screws...) to it. January 2013 (Vote or comment on this photo)
