St. Declan's Well
St. Declan's Well submitted by jeffrep : Site in Co. Waterford: St. Declan's Well, located on the headland above the monastery and round tower in Ardmore, County Waterford, Ireland. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Co. Waterford

St. Declan founded the monastery at Ardmore (Aird Mhór in Irish, meaning "Great Height") prior to the arrival of St. Patrick in Ireland, although there is dispute of the dates usually given for Declan's life (between 350 and 450 CE). Nevertheless, Ardmore is believed to be one of the oldest monasteries in Ireland. Declan converted the people of the Decies, an ancient principality of southern Ireland, to Christianity. St. Declan's Well is located on the headland located above the town of Ardmore where the church and round tower are located. The well served as a Bapistry to the early Christian missionaries.
