South Ythsie
South Ythsie submitted by krautrock : South Ythsie Stone Circle. June 2010 (Vote or comment on this photo)
A four poster site initially, the stones forming a rectangle of 23 feet by 14 feet, but with 2 smaller outlying stones, the 6 stones of South Ythsie for an eliptical stone circle 28 feet by 24 feet.

Large stones make up the stone circle, which initially sat on a high mound. the mound has been eaten away w/ ploughing and erosion, and as a consequence of which the stones have become more exposed over the years.

The stones sit on the old land surface, so clearly the mound was erected after the stones were placed there, for stability? or merely to highlight their position from afar.

Close by is another 4 poster Stone circle.

wiccaman says "close by is another 4 poster Stone circle" in his post of 27/10/2007.
Anybody know what this refers to? According to RCAHMS there is nothing within 250 metres except the site of a cairn, now removed.

2km might conceivably be 'close by' ?

Presumably he refers to Shethin, just 2 km north as the crow flies.

Though it is probably a ring-cairn rather than a 4-poster. Les

A small circle by local standards ..... 6 stones of varying height on a raised platform .... no recumbant - although there is a platform of sorts at the back of the biggest stone .....access is not a problem - you need to walk 1/4 of a mile from the car park and it will most probably be muddy .
There is a sign with some info at the edge of the field ...and I will add this info at a later date along with some pictures when I get them developed .....
