A most definite example of the Christianisation of an existing prehistorc site. At the church of St Mael and St Sulien in Corwen can be found a few features of interest. First is a standing stone built into the east side of the porch, the second is an allegedly cup marked stone forming the base of a 12th Century cross shaft to the south west side of the church building. The leaflet for Corwen Town Trail (Exploring Corwen produced by Denbighshire County Council Tourism Dept 2004) notes the stone as possibly 9th Century.
Nearest parking is on the north side of the A5 a few minutes away off Green Lane. The church can be accessed by crossing the road a little to the west of the Owain Glyndwr monument. The church is high off the south side of the A5.
Update June 2017: Coflein List Entry 306609, which adds: "The cross consists of a 2.2m high square sectioned, tapering cross-shaft, with an ornamented head and an inscribed cross on its east face. This is set in a circular base-stone, 1.6m in diameter and 0.3m high. A late eighteenth century drawing shows what appears to be a possible decayed wheel-head cross. A runic inscription has been claimed."
The cross and its base are also featured on The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) page for Corwen Cross, Denbighshire, which adds: "two other crosses are found at Corwen church, one of which has a decidedly heathen legend attached to it." The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for the Church of St Mael and St Sulien, Corwen, Denbighshire, Wales, which includes a photograph of the cross in the churchyard, tells us the church also houses a small collection of antiquities that are well worth viewing, and describes a "strange shaped stone in the porch wall that could pre-date the church and above the priest's door a flat stone bearing an incised cross".
