During a recent hiking tour I passed in some distance by the Metzenberg and I learned from some locals that it was a hillfort or fortified settlement in prehistoric times.

As this area was Celtic territory it can be assumed that they held this hillfort.

The Metzenberg is protected by steep slopes to the North, West and South. In addition there is a stream to the South called "Heimgraben" (literal translation: home ditch) which may have served as a further protection. The only way to get to the Metzenberg without problems is to the West and this side was protected by a system of two walls and I suppose some diches. The remnants of these walls can still be seen from the air (see the picture with the red arrows).
As I did not have the time to visit the Metzenberg I was only able to take some drone shots and I can not tell anything about possible remnants on the Metzenberg itself.
