Stenen Wal (Stone Wall) is the name of a small street in Deventer. Actually it is a defensive wall dated back to 882AC. It looks like a dike nowadays. You can walk into the small street and see the steep edges of it.
Stenen Wal (Stone Wall)
Ancient sources describe the Viking attack on Deventer in the year 882AC. Thus, the entire, thriving trading centre is said to have been looted and the houses all set on fire. Archaeological research from 2003 proves this: several remains of burnt-down houses were found, as well as knives, broken wine jugs, pans and keys. Whether there were many casualties is not known. So far, no human skeletons have been found from that time that indicate this. It is likely that the people of Deventen fled just in time.
Immediately after the devastating looting, the inhabitants returned to what was left of their city. Under the leadership of Count Everhard de Saks, who ruled Deventer in the name of the emperor, an immense defensive wall was begun. Sixty men built a 1.9-km-long, 5-metre-high and 15-metre-wide wall out of earth in just over two years. Only after building that wall, the inner city was completely rebuilt.
In the 13th and 14th century, two city walls were built on the site of the earthen wall. Thus, the earthen wall became a stone wall. What is now the Graaf van Buren street was a moat at that time.
The uphill street is the only part of the 882AC defensive wall still intact.
