Down by Høgsteinneset we find the Eilifrøysa cairn. This is a burial cairn which got its name after Eiliv Earl. Eiliv Earl lived about 1,500 years after the mound was built. The cairn appears today as a round barrow because of a tiny layer of grass covering the cairns’ structure. The cairn is located on a plain overlooking the sea.
Eilifrøysa is a large cairn, with a diameter of 37 metres and up to 5 meters height. The cairn is built of of stones and earth, and then covered with a layer of peat. This means that the pile is not quite like most burial mounds from the Bronze Age. The skilled construction points towards wealthy building owners. In the eastern part there is a 10 metre wide and 3.5 metre deep crater that goes all the way down to the centre of the cairn. A burial chamber around 60cm long, 50cm wide and around 40cm deep was excavated here. Inside it the burial of a woman dating back to about 375-400 years AD was discovered. The body was adorned with jewellery in gold and silver coating, probably showing that she was a powerful and wealthy person. Among the grave goods were: Ring of gold, 311 g, Gold Locket, Bronze Shellac, 2 silver cup, Fragment of a bronze kettle, fragment of a sort of vessel, a gold medallion, Arrowhead of bone, Shards of clay vessels, Bear claws, Human Bones, Animal Bones, A gold needle and A bone comb. The gold medallion is a unique find (in this area). It has the inscription of emperor Constants (year 337-350) and has obviously been imported from the Roman empire. A secondary burial chamber revealed no findings.
