Ancient Mine, Quarry or other Industry in Lower Egypt (North)
Over the past 4 years a team consisting of Dr. Rodolfo Fattovich - Instituto Universitario Orientale, Naples (Italy) - and Dr. Kathryn A. Bard - Boston University, Boston (USA)have investigated an unusual site at Wadi Gawasis on the Red Sea Coast of Egypt.
The site consists of at least 2 caves which essentially served as dry dock and warehouse for Middle Kingdom Egyptian ships trading on the Red Sea. The caves held well preserved supplies like ropes and boxes as well as the usual ceramics.
One of the boxes had a cartouche of Pharaoh Amenhemhat III who reigned in the 18th Century BCE and the Hyrogliphic inventory list described "Wonderful things of Punt".
So far, Egyptian trade with Punt, perhaps modern day Ethiopia/Eritrea, was described on various ancient steles and temple walls (Hatshepsut), but there never had been conclusive prove of how exactly it was done in erms of logistics. The new find provide persusive evidence that the Egyptian travelled great distance by sea, perhaps as far as perhaps Yemen for Incense etc.
