The site shows signs of inhabitancy going back 3 thousand years to the bronze age. The first recorded settlement however is dated back to the 7th century BC when the Greeks established a colony here. The colony predates the Histria colony to the south by a generation. This makes it the oldest recorded settlement in Romania. Legend says it that the Argonauts rested here on their way back after finding the golden fleece.
The present site comprises of 3 basilicas, a greek necropolis, some defensive walls, and the ancient port.
