Museum in Macedonia. New Archaeology and Palaeontology Museum Opens in Delchevo, Macedonia. The town of Delchevo in eastern Macedonia now boasts a recently opened museum which will display archaeological and paleontological finds from the region.
Named Piyanets, after the region and valley in which the town is located, the museum has already begun to fill its shelves with valuable artefacts, the Utrinski Vesnik newspaper reported today.
The Museum will encourage archaeological and paleontological excavations in the region, which has turned out to be exceptionally rich in both aspects, Daniela Takeva, PR for local self-government told the publication.
She added that the area is in dire need of much bigger excavations than those that have been done until now. During farming or construction work, people often find artefacts which suggest the area was inhabited thousands of years ago, but these artefacts are often destroyed due to a lack of knowledge, Takeva explained.
The idea of the Delchevo local authorities and archaeologists is to keep whatever is found in the area at “home,” in the new museum. This could give rise to the tourist interest in the area, according to the town’s mayor Mirko Ivanov.
Two archaeological digs have been carried out in the Delchevo area so far. At one of them – at the Mogila site, a golden carriage was discovered in a tomb, which – according to archaeologists, dates back to the third century BC. According to the publication, the site needs to be studied further in order to determine who was buried in it.
In addition, paleontological excavations were carried out near the Stamer and Svegor villages, where valuable artefacts were discovered, but – as Utrinski Vesnik notes, the need to continue with the excavations is much larger than what has already been found.
The authorities in Delchevo plan to bring to the new museum the golden carriage and the other artefacts that are now displayed in the museum in the town of Štip and other museums.
