Ancient Village or Settlement in Peloponnese Peninsula
In the Archaic period the nine villages that underlie Tegea joined together to create one city. Tegea was was mentioned by Homer as one of the cities that sent ships and men for the Achaean invasion on Troy. Ancient Tegea was an important religious center of ancient Greece where votive bronzes from the Geometric and Archaic periods were found. The temple burned down in 391 BCE and was subsequently rebuilt. Tegea was conquered by Sparta arond 560 BCE. The city thrived under the Roman Empire but was sacked in 395 CE by the Goths.
