Rock Carvings in Troms

One of the few rock carvings in South Troms, dated back to 2500 B.C.E according to the Tromsø museum. The carvings portray at least 5 figures, one being a full-sized moose approximately 1.4 meters long as well as a gemoetric motif, possibly depicting water or a boat. Perhaps symbolizing where the shoreline was at the time. Also in the upper right, it seems the artist began carving a second moose but stopped halfway through the head. The location of these petroglyphs are on the east side of the island Rolla in Ibestad in the forest behind the houses on Kongsvoll, not far from Vik, about a 5 minute drive North of Hamnvik.

One can hardly find the characters without asking familiar people. I had to ask for directions in the Ibestad Kommune building in Hamnvik. They are also quite difficult to spot. There is no trail leading to them. We had to hike through someone's backyard, jump over a fence, hop over a creek, and up a hill through a forest to find them. Height above sea level is approximately 21 m.

Lite: P. Simonsen 1958 and Past Memories 1970.
