Ancient Village or Settlement in Troms
The Grunnfarnes fjord has probably been settled for hundreds, maybe thousands, of years! The iron age settlement is just a kilometre away from the neolithic settlement.
The Grunnfarnes fjord has probably been settled for hundreds, maybe thousands, of years! The iron age settlement is just a kilometre away from the neolithic settlement. The high mountains surrounding the valley and easy access to the sea, and access to hunting grounds and fields for grazing animals to the east probably made this a very sought after site for settling.
The Iron Age settlement consists of remains from four housings, a very pretty barrow and a stone circle with two larger marker stones. Two of the housings have probably been boat houses because they are very close to the sea and the opening towards the shore.
One of the longhouses are located inside a local modern cemetery, it is around 25 metres long and around 7 metres wide. The wall markings are easily visible.
The other longhouse is very close to the river, it is around 20 metres in length and around 5 metres wide. It is at least a metre deep into the ground and easily visible.
One of the boat houses had been originally 10 metres long, but the sea has washed away around half of it from the sandy ground, today it is half the original length.
The other boat house is around 25 metres in length and around 8 metres wide. It could have contained a large longship.
Next to the smallest longhouse is a deep pit, around 1 metre deep. What this is is uncertain.
Close to the road to the north is a pretty round barrow. It is around 15 metres in length and around 2 metres in height. It has a very pretty rounded shape and appears undamaged.
To the east of the round mound, on a small natural plateau is a stone circle made of small stones placed in a circle. On two of the sides, placed directly opposite each other on the circle itself are two standing stones or grave marker stones. The tallest is around 1.5 metres tall and the smaller is around 80cm in height. The smaller stones in the circle was overgrown with small grass and moss and are not easily visible in the photo.
The site has a parking lot close to the sea next to a picnic table and has an information poster next to the road. The site has a beautiful panoramic view over the fjord and is surrounded by beautiful tall mountains. The road out here is really bad though!
