One of the Jōsaku (城柵) vanguard fortresses established by the Yamato (now Nara in central Japan). ‘jō’ means ‘castle’, and ‘saku’ means ‘fence’. They were, in a sense, fortified colonial towns in the then unexplored area in the Tōhoku (north-eastern) region which was then home to the native “Emishi” tribes. There is now a museum on the site.
Jōsaku has 3 different functions : a branch of central government; a military base against natives; and a residential town for the colonist. Akita-jō is supposed to have had another function : a guesthouse for mission from Balhae kingdom. The discovery of the egg of pork tapeworm from the ‘flush’ toilet ruin here suggests the arrival of pork-eating people from the continent, the Japanese people at that time were vegetarian.
Akita-jō was first built as Dewa-no-ki (出羽柵) in Dewa district (present Yamagata and Akita prefectures, its exact position and chronology unknown), then moved to present place in 733 CE and renamed later. Akita-jō often suffered the riot of native tribes, and the function of governmental branch was transferred to “Kiwa-no Saku” 100km southbound and Akita-jō seemed to be abandoned in the 10th century.
