Carving in Kyūshū

In a wood of Kunisaki Peninsula in Ōita prefecture there lies a natural rock, on recto and verso surface strange marks were inscribed. Some people seriously believe that these are one of ancient Japanese characters before the import of Chinese character. But these characters only appeared in documents after mid Edo era (circa 18 C).
There is a small signpost indicating “神代文字巨石” in the commune (33.59203N,131.66399E), take the crooked path towards the wood. On the way to the site there is a wild-boar preventing fence (33.59333N,131.66380E), to open the fence remove the red wire-ring tying the tips of gate and door (do not forget to tie them again after passing). Then you will find 6 small stone Buddha (33.59443N,131.66364E) which were the guardians of now-deserted graveyard, at that point there is a Y-shaped crossroad, take the left branch and climb the steep slope among the tombstones. When you reach the mountain ridge, you can see the stone on the summit on the left.
