Cup marks, also called fairy-querns or offering hollows, are rock carvings on boulders or exposures of rock. They are often found in association with the pictorial carvings of the Bronze Age, but very little is known about their original age or purpose.
Popular tradition tells about offerings to the fairies (the spirits of the dead) and how people greased the hollows, let blood drop into them to cure ailments, made offerings of metal objects, etc. They have been used as sacrificial sites until modern times.
Cup marks are often found in association with prehistoric tombs, for example on the dolmen at Klastorp, Träslöv parish, and at Lillebörs in Hunnestad parish. These were cult centres in old times, just like this site, where more than 150 cup marks have been hammered into the rock. This is the largest concentration of cup marks on the west coast of Sweden.
