Standing Stones in Østfold

The barrow cemetery and standing stones at Meum was definately the most interesting and fascinating barrow cemetery and collection of menhirs I visited this summer. The site is inside a beautiful forest with fir and pine trees on a low elongated hill but the monuments are easy to see since the ground only has short vegetation of moss and short grass. A footpath crosses the barrow cemetery and the barrows and standing stones are on both sides of the path.

The site has 50 burial monuments, it consists of 35 round barrows (two of them have standing stones in their edges and 5 have a standing stone on top), 4 long barrows and 10 single standing stones.

Most of the barrows are small in size and most of them are unclear in the terrain. The largest barrow, 11m in diameter and 1,5m in height is located in the south end of the cemetery just next to the footpath. The barrows with standing stones in the sides are located in the north and south end of the cemetery. the northernmost are best preserved. The barrow is 9m in diameter and can be marked with a row of stones along the edges that are visible in the NE. 4 round boulders are located around it with 3-6 metres space between them. One has fallen over but the other are still standing it could originally have been 2 more stones. l: inntil 0,4x0,55x0,4m. The stones are around 55cm in height, 40X40cm wide. The southernmost barrow of this kind only has 2 visible stones left in the side.

The round barrows are all between 5 to 10 metres wide and 30cm to 1 metre in height. The long barrows are spread around the field, all of them are oriented NNE-SSW. They range in size from 7-10m long, 4-5 metres wide and around 50cm in height.

All the standing stones are either fallen completely over or are tilting to one side. In the north east of the cemetery is one large stone slab around 1,5 metres wide and 1 metre wide, around 30cm thick strongly tilting to one side. In the middle of the cemetery and on a line arranged paralell to the footpath are 3 standing stones. The tallest is around 2 metres in height and 40X30cm thick and wide, it is also tilting to one side. The other two are 1,5 to 1 metre in lenght and 10-40cm wide but they have also almost fallen over and become overgrown with moss however they are still easy to find. It is around 3 metres between the stones.

All of the rest of the stones have also fallen over or strongly tilting to one side except two smaller stones. All of the stones have been made of granit and are shaped as slabs with pointed tops. The two smaller stones still standing are 30 and 55cm in height and 30-40cm wide. Sone of the other fallen ones are hard to make out the size of since much of them have been overgrown with moss. It is a theory that some of the fallen stones could have been stone slabs from burial chambers that have been dug up long ago.

From a local farm there is a footpath trough some grassy fields up to the barrow cemetery in the forest behind the field.
