Barrow Cemetery in Akershus
Close to Asker church in an open landscape with grain fields and residential areas it is around 10 different sites with round barrows from the early to the late iron age (500BC to 1030AD). They all consists of round barrows built from stones and earth. The barrows probably have had a relation to this area being a gathering place or place of worship before the church was built.
There are two sites of barrows close to the main road from north to south and visible from the church. The one to the south consists of one huge beautiful round barrow, around 25 metres in diameter and around 4 metres in height, and two smaller round barrows, around 10-15 metres across and from 1.5 to 2.5 metres in height. They are covered in short grass and some large pine trees, and are easily visible. They have all very pretty rounded tops and does not seem to have been disturbed.
The site to the north also consists of three round barrows. One huge beautiful barrow, around 28 metres in height and around 4.5 metres in height. The two smaller ones are around 8 to 15 metres in diameter and from 1 to 2 metres in height. The barrows are built close to one another, almost touching each other. They are also covered in short grass and some large trees.
There is a legend that is linked to the barrow monuments at Asker. It reads as follows:
It was said that a large treasure was buried in one of the barrows here. The priest had one night in the 1830s set farm people to dig out one of the mounds in search of treasure. Suddenly, the workers were interrupted by that they could see a strange light over one of the nearby farms. It almost looks like the buildings was on fire, but when workers ran to the farm, everything was all fine. The men went back to the digging, and the same strange light occurred once again. It was therefore decided that they should leave the mound undisturbed.
