Wisconsin Rock Art Ruined by Vandals by bat400 on Wednesday, 08 August 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
Behind Lowe, a member of Wisconsin's Ho-Chunk Nation, and two archaeologists, Ernie Boszhardt and Kathy Stevenson, both from the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center at UW-La Crosse, enter the cave to inspect recently discovered vandalism — the second such incident in less than three years — at one of the state's rock art sites.

Stevenson, leading a group of teachers into the cave last week, discovered the damage at Larsen Cave — letters scratched atop a thunderbird as well as the image of an outstretched arm. And just below the damaged paintings, someone dug a 5-foot pit, possibly in search of artifacts.

"It was awful,'' Stevenson recalled of the disheartening discovery.

The damage at Larsen Cave has archaeologists such as Boszhardt urging renewed attention to a law passed in 1996 that makes damaging antiquities such as the cave art a felony, subject to 3+ years in prison or a fine of up to $10,000.
