This fine standing stone is located in the townland of Slievereagh, Co Cork not far from the county border with Co Kerry. The area is upland hillside pasture located on the southern slopes of the Derrynasaggart Mountains.
I arrived at the site from the north after visiting the location of two wedge tombs to the west of Lough Carrignafurak. Unfortunately, the wedge tombs are no longer visible, either destroyed or their remains now buried beneath the bog.
I was heading for the nearby standing stone pair and was surprised to find this stone as it is not marked on the OS map of the area and is not shown in the archaeological inventory of the National Monuments Service. The nearby standing stone pair are still in situ and lie approx. 140 metres to the SSE of this site.
The stone is aligned NE-SW (approx. 50˚ - 235˚), a common alignment for megalithic monuments in this part of the world. I estimate the stone is approx. just less than 3m tall, 2m wide and 0.4m thick. There are packing stones evident at the base of the stone and another large stone lies prostrate partially buried in the ground a few metres to the NE which may, or may not, be a natural feature.
Old 6 inch maps of the area show the nearby standing stone pair but not this stone, however in my opinion the stone is not a naturally occurring feature and is possibly either a solitary standing stone or surviving stone from a standing stone pair or stone row.
I’ve reported the site to the National Monuments Service for their further review and follow up. They don't miss much but they may have to update their records with this one.
