Complexo Megalítico do Rego da Murta
Complexo Megalítico do Rego da Murta submitted by Bak_teria : Anta 1 do Rego da Murta - The view from the entrance of the corridor. The chamber is enormous. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The site of Rego da Murta consists of a group of several megalithic monuments, at least 3 dolmens and 7 menhir stones. This megalithic complex is located in Ramalhal, in the municipality of Alvaiázere in the Leiria district (Portugal). Currently only two dolmens and some menhir stones can be observed on site. Due to its size, these 2 dolmens have an extraordinary monumentality, which certainly would stand out in the surrounding landscape. Today they are currently hidden in the middle of an eucalyptus forest. Strange as it seems, these monuments are not yet classified.

Anta 1 de Rego da Murta/ Rego de Ramalhal

This is a large monument located in a flat area along the Murta creek. The tumulus has a NW-SE orientation and is quite destroyed. The chamber and corridor are well differentiated. The pillars are made of limestone and the chamber has a maximum diameter of 2.20 m, with an heptagonal or octagonal shape. The archaeological research recorded the presence of burials and cremation of a minimum of 51 individuals of both sexes and age groups. Associated with this cult there was the deposition of domestic and wild animals, as well as ceramic vessels and a great variety of stone artefacts. It has paintings on the headboard pillars and engravings on the pillars on the left side of the chamber. This monument is located about 60m to the South of Anta 2. Due to its artefacts it can be said that this monument was used from 3000 to 1000 BC.

About the menhir stones and the other monuments

There are also the reference of a group of menhir stones. The most known are the Menhir 1 and the Menhir 2. The 1st one has about 1 m high and a polished face, it's turned south and is surrounded by several small pillars, some of them still in situ, which would form a circular area around the menhir. The 2nd stone lies buried almost to the top and is about 30 cm wide and 50 cm long. There are other structures around. One of the faces is polished and is facing south. There are more menhir stones lying around the area. It was also found another monument, probably another dolmen, unfortunately was very destroyed. It was only possible to observe four pillars, two aligned and two of these distant about 10 m. These monuments are part of a pedestrian route organized by the municipality of Alvaiázere.
