Castro de San Chuis
Castro de San Chuis submitted by ernar : An 8-year old picture of the Castro de San Chuis. At this date the site was mostly covered by thick heather undergrowth, though several huts can be identified in the center of the picture. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Castro in Asturias.
Castro de San Chuis: the oldest of the known asturian Castros, this settlement is located on top of the "Pico del Castro" (Castro's Hill) at 783m above sea level, towering over the high Navia valley and controlling access to the many mineral resources of the area.

The site is believed to have been occupied from S.IX BC (Bronze to Iron Age transition in the area) until S.IV AD under Roman influence.

The castro is surrounded by a 3m thick stone rampart enclosing a total area of approximately 4ha. Inside it many stone dwellings can be identified, with different forms depending on the date of construction.

The early huts, - belonging to the celt/iron age period,- present the circular design typical of the era, while the more recent ones adopt the Roman square/rectangular shapes. In some cases, rectangular-shaped buildings have been constructed over older round huts.
