Beacon Hut
Beacon Hut submitted by Bladup : Beacon Hut, There does seem a lot of cairn material for a purely modern build (Vote or comment on this photo)
A rather mysterious site, the HER say it's a ruined round cairn with later modifications. The capstone could be from a chambered cairn. We've given it the benefit of the doubt - see the photos for more details.

First recorded on the Ordnance Survey map of 1907 as a 'cromlech', this monument has been variously described as an Iron Age dwelling and a megalithic tomb, but the use of coursed walling would be unusual in a megalithic structure. Glyn Daniel considered it had prehistoric origins but modified with a shelter for a beacon used during the Spanish Armada, the beacon itself being raised on the iron supports on top of the capstone.

Beacon Hut
Beacon Hut submitted by Bladup : Beacon Hut, Re-visiting this site all these years later and in far better weather i now see all the metalwork and modern stuff in the build (Mentioned by other Portal folk), So I do take back my excited strong declaration of it been the remains of a beehive hut or chambered cairn, Although the capstone and cairn material could certainly have once been from such a site (Vote or comment on this photo)

Beacon Hut
Beacon Hut submitted by Bladup : Beacon Hut, What's modern and what's ancient? (The metal is certainly modern), This site is a real head scatcher! (Vote or comment on this photo)

Beacon Hut
Beacon Hut submitted by Bladup : Beacon Hut, It looks modern but with a possible re-used capstone and cairn material from something far older (Vote or comment on this photo)

Beacon Hut
Beacon Hut submitted by Bladup : Beacon Hut, Ancient or Modern? Or maybe a bit of both

Beacon Hut
Beacon Hut submitted by Bladup : Beacon Hut, I wouldn't stay in here too long (It was good for a bad rain shower though) As it doesn't look very safe to me!

Beacon Hut
Beacon Hut submitted by Bladup : Beacon Hut, Is that old re-used cairn material? or Not!

Beacon Hut
Beacon Hut submitted by Fof : The Public Footpath sign has been removed and it is necessary to climb over the locked gate. Daniel suggests this was an early Iron Age dwelling, modified as a shelter and beacon during the time of the Spanish Armada. There are iron brackets on the side of the capstone and another on the top. This view is of the SE face Ref: Daniel, GE, 1950, The Prehistoric Chamber Tombs of England ...
