AstroGeologist visited on 25th Mar 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 3 Gleniffer Brae Menhirs : Approaching the wall surrounding the field l notice a lot of medium sized Menhirs that have been used in the farmers wall. These were more than likely something to do with the Gleniffer Brae Menhirs, which might possibly be Alignment Stones. When drawing a straight line through the centre of the 2 Menhirs they line up with the centre of Dumbuck Crannog 14.2km away Dumbuck Crannog (situated between the Volcanic Basalt Plugs of Dumbarton Rock & Sheep Hill) is 1.4km from the settlement at Dun Bowie Hillfort, to the North. The Dumbarton Rock settlement was only 1.6km downriver to the West, Sheep Hill Fort was 1.9km upriver to the East, and it is here that the substantial discovery of Greenland Cup & Ring Markings were found. Where the people who aligned these Menhirs related to the Dumbuck/Dun Bowie community - Was it the same people who done both? There was a Neolithic Settlement found on the South bank of the Clyde, as well as several Crannog remains discovered on the Southern bank of the River Clyde between Langbank and Erskine. *Getting There ; From Paisley Gilmour Street train station, walk across the old County Square and onto Gilmour Street. Cross over onto St Mirren Street and get the Number 26 bus to Glenburn, get off on Gleniffer Road, at the Stanely Reservoir. From here its about a 1/2 hour walk. From the reservoir you follow Gleniffer Road uphill for 2.3km. About 350m before the Menhirs you will pass a carpark on your left. You will have to climb a wire fence to enter the field, the area around the Menhirs can be boggy.

Two stones at the top of Gala Braes in Paisley, sit next to a drystone wall in the corner of a field (You can see them from the road). They are aligned roughly NNW (Smaller Stone 'B') ~ SSE (Bigger Stone 'A')

Like most ancient stones, there isnt much is known about these ones. Some think they may have been used as procession stones during Festivals or Funerals.

They may possibly once have been part of a larger Stone Circle (There are lots of medium sized 3ft~4ft stones in the walls directly next to the boulders, they look so out of place compared to all the regular normal sized stones in the wall).

Stone 'A' is 1.2m high, 1.2m wide and 90cm thick.
Stone 'B' looks like at one point it may have been slightly more upright, it is 80cm high, 1.5m long and 1.0m wide.

*Over a small bog, across the field, approx 480m ENE of the Menhirs is a Motte & Henge like feature, flat on top, it has a gentle slope down the SW edge, at the bottom is a large congregation of stones, which follows a rough path to another lot of stones not to far away, these are mostly covered by turf & grass. En route to this mound is a small Long Barrow/Cairn type structure*
