The exhibition tells the story of Dr. MacLean’s work on the Black Isle as an antiquarian and archaeologist with items from his collection on display. Dr. Maclean, born in Inverness, lived and worked as a doctor in the Dingwall area for much of his life until his death in 1930 after which his widow gave his collection of finds and artefacts to the then National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland. Much of his archaeology was conducted on the Black Isle including excavations at Caird’s Cave near Rosemarkie. groam House Museum and Archaeology for the Highlands (ARCH) have collaborated in a community archaeology project to produce this exhibition about this largely forgotten collector, his work and his finds. A number of the best items from Dr. MacLean’s collection, including many found locally, have been loaned by the National Museum of Scotland and are on display. It is hoped that a temporary exhibition will also be on display with the results of a planned re-excavation of Caird’s Cave due to take place 21st June to 4th July. Free admission.

Location: Groam House Museum, High Street, Rosemarkie IV10 8UF.
