Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Conwy (Bwrdeistref Sirol)
Five early Christian inscribed stones at St Tudclud's, Penmachno.
The church is recorded as Coflein NPRN 43816, which tell us "Two churches once stood in the churchyard. That dedicated to St Enclydwyn fell into ruin following the reformation and no trace is now apparent. The church dedicated to St Tyddyd was replaced by the present building in 1857. This contains fittings from its predecessor".
The six (although only 5 are described in the record) inscribed stones in the church are recorded as Coflein NPRN 27528, which includes details of each stone, together with their inscriptions.
The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for St Tudclud’s Church, Penmachno, Conwy (Bwrdeistref Sirol), North Wales. The Journal also includes details of "A sixth gravestone is of the 13th century and commemorates prince Iorwerth ab Owain Gwynedd (Iorwerth Drwyndwn), who died in 1174 and was the eldest son of Owain, King of Gwynedd. And another slightly more recent slab-stone, maybe from the 8th century, has only an inscribed cross upon it". The Journal also gives us local legends together with a list of reference sources for more information.
