St Fillan's Well (Pittenweem)
St Fillan's Well (Pittenweem) submitted by KiwiBetsy : St Fillin’s Well is in fact little more than a seeping wetness from the right hand wall of the left hand cave within St Fillin’s Cave. The whole cave is rather damp, as caves are apt to be, but in one spot the seeping gathers into a puddle .... a puddle that sadly we didn’t photograph, not being sure at the time that it was St Fillin’s Well. St Fillin, an 8th century Irish monk, is s... (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Fillan's Well (Pittenweem)
St Fillan's Well (Pittenweem) submitted by KiwiBetsy : St Fillan’s Well is a small pool of water in St Fillan’s Cave. St Fillan is the Patron Saint of the mentally ill, and sufferers were taken to the cave in the hope of cure. They were bound in the cave and left overnight alone to await miraculous intervention. If their bonds were loosened by morning, it was taken as a sign that they had been cured. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Re: St Fillan's Well by Anonymous on Sunday, 21 October 2007
hi, yes i have. in fact i used to live in cove wynd and our garden is next to it. the body of the cave is in the garden and the priory is up the top. my brother was very naughty and dug a tunnel through the sandstone into the cave to get to the coins in the small 'well'. it has a very serene atmosphere once in, but not a lot to see as per your description which is accurate.

i don't suppose any one will know if it had a stone font or if the priory had one as one was found buried in our garden!

The key to the cave is obtainable from the Gingerbread Horse Cafe in the High Street, there is a charge of one pound per person. The cave has electric lighting but the ground is very uneven and damp. It separates from a kind of antechamber into a Y shape, one arm of which has an Episcopal Church altar which might kill the atmosphere for some but means that it is very well cared for. There are often little primulas in moss 'planted' around the well.

Water is hard to collect as it trickles down rock and the water collected in 'basin' is full of coins which make it taste nasty. Once I found tiny remains of a blue candle there.
