Ring Cairn in Scottish Borders

This cup and ring marked stone is recorded as Canmore ID 54516. An entry from 1956 says: "NT 499 403. A cup marked boulder measuring 3ft 10ins in length by 3ft 8ins in width and 1ft 8ins in thickness was found in 1936 in a cultivated field half a mile SE of Hawksnest and 75 yds N of the road from Hawksnest to Ladhopemoor. The stone, lying prone and plough-scarred, bears 23 shallow cup marks on its upper surface, varying from 1in to 1 3/4in diameter." This was updated in 1969, recording: "This stone was found by Morris, who locates it to a spot 100yds NE of the road, 100yds NW of a wall. He notes, 'at least four cups up to 1 3/4 ins diameter, much weathered'."

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also feature a page for this site - see their entry for Hawksnest, Langshaw, Melrose, Roxburghshire, which gives a brief archaeology & history.
