Holed Stone in West Midlands

The Bargain Stone can be found at St Peter`s Church in Wolverhampton. This rare example of a holed standing stone stands within railings surrounding the church. It gets its name from the practice of shaking hands through the hole to seal a bargain. It may look like a gravestone, but it isn`t; they`ve all been laid flat on the ground. There has been a church on this site for over a thousand years, and there is an impressively tall Saxon cross nearby.

The Bargain Stone
The Bargain Stone submitted by TimPrevett : The holed Bargain Stone outside St Peter's in Wolverhampton City Centre. It is believed bargains, probably deals on wool traded from the Welsh Marches, would have been sealed with a handshake through this stone. It is thought to be a well weathered and broken gargoyle, with the hole having been the drainage. Don't miss the huge Anglo Saxon cross shaft nearby. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Re: The Bargain Stone by Anonymous on Tuesday, 28 February 2012
I was told that the name for this stone is a "deal stone".
As stated, two people sealed an agreement by shaking hands through the hole in the stone.
This is where the term "It's a deal" comes from.
Wolverhampton was a market town at one stage.
The main fare was sheep and wool. This stone would have been used by merchants and traders at these markets.

Re: The Bargain Stone - Notes on Visiting Wolverhampton City Centre by TimPrevett on Saturday, 28 July 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
If you visit Wolverhampton by car, do it early on a bright summer weekend morning, like I did (I got there for 7am). Approach the centre from the north on Stafford Street, turning right at a small roundabout on to Wulfruna Street. There are a few diagonal slotted parking bays right next to St Peter's - parking free before 8.30 at time of writing. Do take in the historical interpretation plaques, and the imposing statue of the city's founder, Lady Wulfrun (latin version Wulfruna), as well as The Bargain Stone and Cross Shaft a short distance from each other.
