Ancient Village or Settlement in Yorkshire (West)

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) features a page for this enclosure - see their entry for Oldfield Hill, Meltham, West Yorkshire, which gives directions for finding this site, together with photographs, an old drawing and a brief archaeology & history.

The site is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 47772, an extract of which reads: "A small earthwork with bank and ditch at Oldfield Hill was identified by Richmond in 1923 as a Roman fort; this opinion was subsequently amended by him in favour of its being a possible native farmstead. Excavations in 1960-2, by J.P.Toomey, showed the site to be of Iron Age date and probably a fortified farmstead ... Listed and described by Challis and Harding as an Iron Age defensive D-shaped enclosure with stone box rampart and outer ditch."

This monument is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1017272, which adds: "The monument includes a `D'-shaped late prehistoric enclosed settlement. It is situated on Oldfield Hill, 340m west of Wentworth Farm. The enclosure is approximately 80m by 85m in overall size. It has an earth and stone bank about 9m wide and 0.8m high, with an internal ditch on all but the south east side. On this side, the bank runs along the top of a steep scarp."
