TheCaptain visited on 7th Jun 2005 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 2 Access: 4 I cant see much of a future for this poor little dolmen, which is currently pleasantly situated on a little mound on some sandy heathland. Marker tape and trenches are set out around it, with diggers and other heavy plant, and I would think that before too long this whole area will be a building site for yet more holiday homes in this very popular beach and holiday area. The dolmen is a simple thing, with its 2.5 by 2 metre capstone sat at a jaunty angle on top of three support stones. A few other stones lay scattered around on the remains of its tumulus. A sarcophagus and three bodies were found here in 1901. According to legend, the table spins at the sound of the bells of the nearby St Nicholas-de-Brem church.

Pierre Levée de Soubise
Pierre Levée de Soubise submitted by thecaptain : Pierre Levée de Soubise, Bretignolles-sur-Mer, Vendée. This cute little dolmen looked to be in serious danger in June 2005, as it is in the middle of a new housing development. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Nice little dolmen near Bretignolles-sur-Mer in Vendée. The dolmen is a simple thing, with its 2.5 by 2 metre capstone sat at a jaunty angle on top of three support stones. A few other stones lay scattered around on the remains of its tumulus.

Until 2005, this dolmen sat on a nice big bit of open grassland heath. But the profit potential of this land near to the sea was obviously too much to leave it as it was.

A sarcophagus and three bodies were found here in 1901.

According to legend, the table spins at the sound of the bells of the nearby St Nicholas-de-Brem church.

interesting to see nothing built around it on here or google maps, bing maps or geoportail. Is it possible to easily find out when the pictures were taken? Or was the development stopped for some reason ?

After having seen The Captain's photo I was a bit worried about this site and found this official document dating "April 2008":
http://modules.vendee.pref.gouv.fr/sdap/fichiers/monument55.pdf
So hopefully it survived the construction works in its proximity.

To be honest, I was not expecting any deliberate damage to be done to the dolmen, and the area within the taped off bit to be left untouched. But the protected area was so small around the dolmen that I thought accidental damage might easily happen, and when all the building work was finished, the poor thing would be lost in a built up maze round the back of somebodies garage.

When I visited this dolmen in early June 2005, the grassland area around it was being taped off, and sewerage systems dug for a new housing development. There wasnt much room at all being left around the cute little dolmen.

I wonder if its still alive and well, and easy to visit by the public.
