The three disc barrows on Setley Plain are the only ones of this kind in the New Forest area. They are similar in size and section to those on Oakley Down on Cranborne Chase and those near Stonehenge.

The main difference is that the Setley Plain barrows have one large central mound whereas the others on Oakley Down and at Stonehenge have a smaller mound on the flat area surrounded by the ditch and external bank. For this reason these barrows could alternatively be classed as bell barrows.

Another unusual feature of these barrows is that the pair at SU296000 are united by the intersection of their encircling banks. An old, but not ancient, linear bank tangentially touches the encircling bank of the westernmost barrow in this pair.

All three barrows were mutilated by the antiquarian Richard Warner, who in 1792 recorded the results of his top-down digging in the central mounds. He found evidence of buried cremations.

Access Setley Plain lies south of Brockenhurst, and to the west of the A337 Brockenhurst-Lymington Road. The nearest parking is to the north of the barrows on the verge of the minor road that crosses the NE corner of the plain. The barrows are on the west facing slope as the plain dips into Three Beech Bottom (where the Lymington branch line runs) and the earthworks are fairly obvious on this open heathland.

Setley Plain disc barrows submitted by JimChampion : Composite view of the easternmost barrow from the other barrow of the intersecting pair at grid ref SU296000 on Setley Plain. The low sun casts shadows that make clear the heather-covered outer bank and ditch. The photo isn't wonky - the barrow is on a gentle slope towards the railway line in the valley bottom. The earthworks are noticeable on this open expanse of heathland, but not easy to photograph. Here the low winter sun casts shadows that make the ditch and outer bank visible, and also the mutilated central mound with its covering of burnt gorse bushes. (Vote or comment on this photo)

The view is from the bank of the eastern barrow, which can be seen in the foreground curving off to the left. The bank of the more westerly barrow curves to the right from the centre of the photo. The platform and mound of the westerly barrow is covered with gorse bushes and dead bracken foliage. The lean to the left is real - thi... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Setley Plain disc barrows submitted by JimChampion : View southeast along the outer bank of the easternmost barrow of the intersecting pair at grid ref SU296000. The barrow's inner ditch and mound are on the left. The shadow of a linear earthwork (not prehistoric) can be seen on the right leading down into the centre of the photo. The eroded path along the barrow's bank exposes the white gravel, bleached by the acidic heath soil. The lone disc barro... (Vote or comment on this photo)
