Probably the most ancient and interesting of the multitude of caves in the city of Nottingham. Its location suggests to many antiquarians that it was carved out my ancient Britons and these caves were the source of the name Tigguocobauc thought to derive from the celtic for house of caves.

They were certainly used from in the 1200s (and possibly since Saxon times) as a chapel. The carving out in parts in in a Romanesque fashion, having a barrel roof with decorated string course between it and the wall. Parts of the structure suggest a shrine as in Repton which pilgrims could walk all the way around. Whatever was here it was destroyed in the Reformation. The site went through various uses and stages of abandonment. Finally in the early part of this century it was restored as a consequence of the construction of new apartments on the land infront of it.

Access can be made by phone or when it is opened for Heritage Open days in September. If you are in the area it is worth a look.
