Marker Stone in Yorkshire (North)

Harlow Bush is a named boundary stone which today (2022) marks the boundary between the urban authorities of Redcar & Cleveland and Scarborough District as well as the civil parishes of Danby, Loftus & Lockwood.

Sited on a slight rise on the southern edge of Liverton Moor, it is a natural boulder which was known as Lardenthorn* in the 14C. It measures about 2ft in height, 2ft east to west and 3ft north to south.

Close by and directly to its south along the urban authority boundary line at NZ 71718 11817 is a masoned stone, probably 18C, which today as well as marking the UA boundary also marks the boundary between the civil parishes of Lockwood and Danby. This stone is often mistaken for Harlow Bush, probably because it is an obvious boundary stone whilst the natural boulder is not. This stone is about 3ft in height, rectangular in cross section, measuring about 8 inches (E/W) and 11 inches (N/S). Towards the top of the south face, though barely legible it is engraved Danby, there is another line of engraving beneath that but it is illegible to me. There is a bench mark about mid way.

The yellow arrow at the top of the image indicates the well masoned boundary stone at NZ 71718 11817 often mistakenly referred to as Harlow Bush. Probably because it looks like what one expects a boundary stone to look like whilst the actual Harlow Bush boundary stone is in this case the boulder.

Line underneath, don’t know I can’t make it out, maybe the odd letter but nothing that makes any sense. Though same as the top line it looks to be in lower case except for the first letter.

Harlow Bush submitted by johndhunter : BS nearby at NZ 71718 11817 – East Face, October 2014. The fact that its top was at some stage painted white also indicates that it is also a Dawnay Estate boundary marker as well as being a parish and urban authority marker.

During the 1792 boundary perambulation there were several names given for this stone. The primary name being Harlot Busk, alternate names were Harlow Bush as it is today, otherwise Harlot Thorn, Harlow Thorn or High Thorn
Information obtained from comments on this flickr entry about the Good Goose Thorne boundary stone.
