JoAtherton visited on 21st Jun 2023 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 5 Access: 4 Drive all the way down Church Lane to St Mary's Church. There is parking for a few cars. A short path leads down to the well to the right of the church. It can get quite overgrown with butterbur during the summer months but path is walked regularly by dog owners along the Bunyan Way along the River Ouse which seems to keep the leaves from covering the path totally. Offerings of flowers, coins and shells are often visible in the spring water making me think it is frequently visited. Crystal clear water, very cold and I regularly have a drink with no ill effects!

Holywell (Bedfordshire)
Holywell (Bedfordshire) submitted by DavidCWoods : TL991536. The church of St. John the Baptist in Stevington has directions in the porch. Turn left out of the church gate and follow the wall round until you come to the well. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Holywell (Bedfordshire)
Holywell (Bedfordshire) submitted by DavidCWoods : TL991536 There was a small stream flowing downhill to join that from the well. We followed it uphill and discovered another arch in the wall - stone built, with a larger pool, draining into the stream. It was covered in bramble until parted with a stick. Can you drink the water without having to boil it first?

Yes, I drink it all the time (not too much, just in case) and have experienced no ill effects. Provided the water is clear and always flowing, I don't think there can be a problem as you're drinking it at source before any cattle or worse, people, can mess with it.

The Church is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin (ie the Mother of God). The well is clear of any brambles etc and is very clear

Beautiful well it astounds me how beautiful it really is. easy to draw the water from a step into it would be nice and the church could put a history board there as well. always ice cold and crystal clear water. well! worth a visit.

Greetings, What an interesting write-up of this site, wonderful! Just to round it off, sometimes observers consider the large-leaved plants to be "gunera", but actually we feel that they are possibly "Butterburr", If so, then they are possibly on land which is a nature reserve belonging to The Beds, cambridgeshire Etc, Wildlife Trust. So far as we are aware, if that is the case, then the reserve is open to the public.

Bright Blessings. The Pagan Hive.

I have visited this well with friends, we cleared it of filth and litter, but not plants and then held a pagan ritual here at Imbolc. It is very very beautiful and very very cold! The water runs off into a marshy area with huge Gunnera plants, the whole area is very wild.

This well is worth a visit, its said the well never freezes and has healing properties for eyes. Recently the area around the well has been cleared some of the mystery has gone but its made it easier to locate.
