Sculptured Stones in Iceland
I was visiting the absolutely gorgeous little church in Hof (one of the last 6 turf churches in Iceland) and I came across some peculiar carved stones just outside.
One, south of the church, is described as a water tub used by the famed local blacksmith to cool hot iron. It is quite deep.
The other rock is just outside the gate and it has two much shallower basins carved on the top. The overspill of water from one of the basins escapes through a small lateral channel. The overspill from the other leaks out through a small hole carved higher up in the stone. There is no indication about their use. A plaque underneath reads: "MUNDLAUG Heimild máldagi 1343", and the closer I got to a translation is, for the first word, "Mouth basin"; a kind receptionist told me later on that it's just a Name rather than a word with clear meaning.
