This wheelhouse was excavated by the Ministry of Works in 1956 and five occupation phases identified. The earliest phase included a long pottery sequence suggesting that the house was occupied for a considerable time. Yellow vitreous beads found during this work were dated to the 2nd century or a little later. The building was re-occupied in the 5th - 8th Centuries AD and finally in late medieval times.

All that can now be seen at this site now is the inner face of the wheelhouse wall, outlined by a single course of stones along its north segment and by an odd stone here and there on its southern arc.

The excavation report calls this site A'
Cheardach Mhor, the Big Smithy, but this name
does not appear on the Ordnance Survey map.
Along with A• Cheardach Bheag at Drimore
, Sallas, and two wheelhouses at
Benbecula Airport, the site was excavated for
the Ministry of Works in 1956 as a 'rescue dig'
when the rocket range was being set up.

The West Gerinish site is uncomplicated by
comparison with most wheelhouses. Excavation
revealed a large ( I 0.8m diameter) 11-piered
house with a long period of occupation. ·n1ere
was evidence of several distinct phases of later
re-use inside and immediately outside the house,
but this was well separated from the original
occupation material by a layer of blown sand.
The wheelhouse was the first building on the
mound, and shows no trace of the souterrains,
annexes or outbuildings which accompany other
examples.

As so often elsewhere, the siting of this
wheelhouse is something of a mystery. The
nearest building stone is half a mile away:
running water is equally distant. Only two
fishbones were recovered during the excavation
despite the fact that the sea is just 300 metres
away. The amount of discarded shells on the
site show that shellfish was an important
resource. The surrounding machair itself must
have been the main attraction, for though it is
now frequently waterlogged. in the Iron Age it
was drier. and better for pasture or cultivation.
