The Cross is to the left when you walk through the main doors.
It has it's only little recess at the back of the Abbey. The Cross has carvings on all 4 sides, although most are worn away due to weathering.
It is a really impressive Celtic Cross, and it's position in the Abbey in front of the Wallace Window provides a nice peaceful setting for the cross.
*Getting There ; Only 400m from Paisley Gilmour Street train station.
Walk across the old County Square and onto Gilmour Street.
Take your first left onto Gauze Street and cross the bridge, take the first right into Abbey Close and the entrance is facing the White Cart Water.
One of three remaining, complete Celtic Crosses that survive from the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde, the other 2 being the 'Sun Cross' in Govan, and the 'Netherton Cross' in Hamilton (The 'Barochan Cross' contains the most carvings and designs of the 3)
Originally this Celtic Cross was located in a small hamlet named Barochan, 2km E of a Settlement called Kilallan (Named after an Irish Monk called Fáelán ~ later canonized as St. Fillan) and 2km N of a settlement called Kilpeter (Now called Houston - or Hughs Town, after Knight Templar, Sir Hugh de Paduinan) and was situated near an old mill, on a track that lead to Alt Clut/Dun Breatann, which was the capital of Strathclyde at the time.
When first erected it was on the North side of Barochan Burn, but near the end of the nineteenth century it was moved by a farmer to a knoll on the South side of the burn. Incidentally. 1951 aerial photographs reveal this knoll was the site of an ancient Hillfort.
Thought to have been carved between the 8th & 10th century, the Sandstone cross is 1.95cm high & now stands in Paisley Abbey under the 'Wallace Window' (Wallace having been taught by Monks at the Abbey) where it was moved for its protection in 1981.
For pictures of the cross on top of the knoll see Canmore ID 43098.
