Knockinaam Standing Stone submitted by PaulM : Standing stone near Knockinaam Lodge Hotel This standing stone is quite small (~1.5 m) and unremarkable except for the hand recent agricultural development has dealt it. Set a little way back from the lane that runs from Portpatrick to Meikle Port of Spittal at NX027524 the stone has become partially buried by the recent construction of a haylage store. Standing Stone (Menhir) in Dumfries and Galloway found just off the minor road going SE from Portpatrick. It is under threat from the silage heap beside it.

The stone is one of a series of standing stones down the Rhin of Galloway that start at Knock and Maize in the North and go right to the southern tip moving from west coast to east coast about half way down.

For more information see Canmore ID 60621, which adds: This stone stands at the corner of a modern enclosure on a gravel terrace 220m SE of North Port o'Spittal farmhouse; it is roughly square in section, measuring 0.7m by 0.6m at the base and 1.4m in height."

The Canmore name "North Port O' Spittal" seems more appropriate than Knockinaam which is the name of a lodge some distance away.

Whilst this stone is under threat from a nearby silage heap, the Rhins of Galloway is one of the most spectacular places I have visited in this part of Scotland. Travelling down right to the southern tip to the Mull of Galloway with its lighthouse and spectacular cliffs is a must. When we last went (some 20 years ago now!) we were confronted by Army troops on exercise. As we drove up to them they turned and pointed their rifles at us (but let us drive on!).
