Misc. Earthwork in Yorkshire (West)

The first thing to note is that this a different site from Castle Stead Ring, about a mile and a half away.

Old OS maps show an antiquity at this site, and I was disappointed, years ago, to be able to find nothing there. I recently read that it was destroyed to make an emergency airfield, presumably in the Second World War (Reg Hindley, "Oxenhope: The Making of a Pennine Community", Amadeus Press, Cleckheaton, 2004, p. 8). A rectangular earthwork, it is is usually said to have been Iron Age, but Hindley suggests that it might have been a Roman marching camp.

Castle Steads
Castle Steads submitted by rich32 : About 300m south of the hillfort is a substantial bank (6.5m wide) & ditch (10m wide) which runs to the tune of 300meters E-W. Not quite sure why its in this position, but maybe it’s a later edition to the site & offered some protection to folks living just outside the original hillfort, with fences running down from the ramparts to this feature… (just my deluded thoughts only) (Vote or comment on this photo)

Castle Steads
Castle Steads submitted by rich32 : 99.9% of the walling is in a ruinous state, 5 lone stones (right of centre) stand in whats probably their original position. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Castle Steads
Castle Steads submitted by rich32 : These walls must have been some sight 2800yrs ago, been in the region of 2.5m thick & 3-4m high. Tim Laurie (2nd from right) who was guiding people round the site stands on the outside of hillfort. (Vote or comment on this photo)

This is probably the second "Castlestead Ring" referred to by Paul Bennett in "The Old Stones of Elmet" (p. 224). The plan at the top of that page, being rectangular and with a field wall, is probably also of Castle Stead rather than Castle Stead Ring.
