Round Barrow(s) in Lower Saxony, Bremen

The so-called 'Paschberg' is a Bronze Age tumulus that has had quite an eventful history over the past century. It probably formed one of the largest tumuli in a former barrow cemetery, of which only five other tumuli are preserved today (these can be made out in the forest north and south of the Paschberg and are heavily overgrown and not particularly large). The age of the tumulus is about 3800-3200 years.
Similar to the tumulus near Riensförde near Stade, it was used as an execution site in the more modern times (mostly by hanging).
From the middle of the 18th century, the tumulus was no longer used as an execution site and the villagers of Agathenburg used it as a traditional place for their Easter bonfires. Hence the current name: 'Paschberg', which refers to the Latin word 'paschae' for Easter.
From 1920 the tumulus was used to erect the World War I. and (after 1945) II. memorial monuments. The villagers henceforth celebrated their Easter bonfire on another nearby tumulus (which unfortunately no longer exists today).
For the Paschberg as well as the five other smaller tumuli, an information board was erected by the responsible Stade monument conservators (See my photos - the information from this text has been translated from these panels).
