The Stein von Othmarschen measures 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.2 m and has a volume of 22 m3 and a weight of 60 t. Research by the University of Hamburg revealed that the stone is a Younger Småland Granite and therefore 1.7 to 1.8 billlion years old. It stems from Målilla in south Sweden and came to northern Germany embedded in glacier ice during the Wolstonian Stage (Saale Eiszeit) 150000 years ago.
Today, it lies in the Elbtunnel Park above the entrance to the Elbe Tunnel. As the picture of 2012 shows, it has fallen victim to all too modern "Rock Art“.
