Widdington Puddingstone
Widdington Puddingstone submitted by Thorgrim : Puddingstone and sarsen boulders are rare and special in Essex and Hertfordshire where the only other stone is flint and chalk. Sometimes the puddingstones and sarsens have been erected at junctions of tracks and lanes as at Widdington. Elsewhere, they can be found to mark safe pathways across marshes and at fords across rivers. They are not at all common and can sometimes be found in old churchy... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Widdington Puddingstone
Widdington Puddingstone submitted by Thorgrim : Puddingstone is a hard Tertiary conglomerate made of flint pebbles set in quartzite "cement" very much harder than manmade cement. This photo shows the pebbles in the quartzite and cavities where they have been. For this reason, puddingstone was also known as "breeding stone" because it seemed that the boulders were breeding and giving birth to the smaller stones. The pebbles of flint have been...
