Sculptured Stone in Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro)

Just east of the A4076 lies the church of St Peter and St Cewydd, Steynton. In the 1870s a pillar-stone in the churchyard was being used as a Victorian gravestone and an insciption placed on to it. However, later the stone was recognised as having an Ogham inscription on its left edge. The stone was eventually taken into the church for safety.

It is thought to date from the 5th century CE and the Ogham notches to recall a Romano-Britain by the name of GENDILI (Gendilius) which would be the same in Latin. The pillar stands at 1.2 metres high. An ornate round cross on the face looks Celtic in origin but, in fact, this could well be more recent - possibly a Victorian fake?
