Stebno Stone Cross
Stebno Stone Cross submitted by ladrin : Massif ancient stone cross of Stebno. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A massive monolithic stone cross, in a beautiful setting on the ridge above the Stebno pond in Bohemia, Czech Republic. It is said to be a medieval propitiatory cross, although its true origin is unknown. Taking into account that this region is labelled as the centre of "local megalithic culture", it could also be a much older monument, later Christianised.

Some sources associate this cross with the French armies in Napoleonic campaigns but these are unconfirmed. The truth is that similar objects also occur in southern France.

Anyway the cross is about 140cm tall and consists of three circles with reliefs of crosses. Local people recently straightened it into vertical position because it lay long time sunken in the soil.
