Ancient Village or Settlement in Slovenia
Type of site: Prehistoric trap
For better presentation how the prehistoric trap looks like, showing its entrance and the chamber deepening, additional photos were taken.
Wondering around the trap turned up the second one.
It is situated approx. 300m underneath the first trap on the slope upon positioned 552m above sea level. The access with the car is more convenient from the other direction thus only 150m path remain from the car right to the trap. The first trap is according to GPS measuring situated exactly at 600m above sea level. A few days ago one of the visitors expressed an interest if there is any indication regarding the age of the trap.
Beside barrows remains, I have simply forgotten to mention that as a walker I didn’t pay much attention to the flints found not far from the trap up until now. Flints appeared to me on the same day as a trap. Regarding the distance from the trap site and where the flints were found it just might be one more settlement. Far from being a professional, I leave this matter of judgment entirely to you, to estimate according to the flints shape consideration, what this is we are looking at.
Prehistoric trap II
The first two pictures of the trap II showing separately, the channel entrance leading towards the trap chamber, and the trap chamber itself. The third one is showing the channel turn with part of the trap chamber, while upon the 4th picture there is a trap position as a whole. The narrow about 0,6m wide and approx. 6m long channel is cut into the rock as well as the trap chamber. The beginning of the channel itself starts at a point scarcely 0.7m away from the abyss, with immediate deepening of about 0.7m depth, and 1m wide, narrowing slowly down to approximately 0.6m width leading towards the chamber. When the beast made its way towards the bait, as a matter of fact it would not have had any chance left to escape anymore. The Abyss behind the channel entrance didn’t allow any escape by jumping. I also assumed pointed sticks with their sharp ends inverted towards the chamber, whereby a“hedgehog caressing effect” was achieved. This allowing an easy approach towards the bait, while on the other side preventing the way back out of the chamber.
The lower wall of the channel is 0.7m deep while the upper wall is higher due to the angle of slope . When the channel comes close to the lower part of the chamber, it makes a sheer turn up into the chamber.
This trap is located on steeper slope, therefore the channel turn is almost level with the ground.
The amount of soil collected in the channel/chamber is deeper, but the trap chamber deepness does not reach Trap I, while chamber length and width are much the same. Someone might say, nonsense, all the remains are covered with soil in such a long period of time. But karstic land is very much like cheese. The land hardly seems to loose any soil.
