Cave or Rock Shelter in Crook County, Oregon
A "teenage" hangout in modern times. A possible ceremonial site to pre-historic man. The Redmond Caves are ancient lava tube passages, several of which weathered and collapsed thousands of years ago to form an entry to the surface. Ancient Americans used the site and left artifacts.
The location given is approximate.
Description of site and excavation with photos.
[Information from "Archaeologists Discover Ancient Use of Lava Tubes." American Archaeology, Fall 2006, among web posted entries on excavations, including an excavation report from an anthropologist who described the thrill of discovery associated with finding burnt underwear among the more modern artifacts.]
