Ancient Village or Settlement in Hokkaidō. A grandeur residential site spanding from Jōmon, post-Jōmon, Satsumon, Tobinitai to Ainu era. More than 2000 ruins of pit dwellings were excavated and 10000 of them are supposed to lie in the wood on the plateau near Pō-gawa (ポー川) river wetland. A house of Tobinitai culture, which is peculiar to the area around Shiretoko peninsula (知床半島), is reconstructed in the site. Along with neighbouring 2 sites (now both buried back into the soil, only signposts stand), it consists of “Shibetsu Isekigun” (標津遺跡群) historical site group.

A museum is attached (closed during the end of Nov. to Apr.). The entrance fee to the site and museum is free, 310 Japanese Yen for the rental bicycle charge towards the site 800m away from the museum. Beware of ‘higuma’ (ヒグマ, 羆) the fierce brown bear! (you can borrow a bear frightening bell at the museum)
