Carrières Souterraines du Pédégas
Carrières Souterraines du Pédégas submitted by lafemmedepierre : Site in Midi:Haute-Garonne (31) France Finally we decided to quit this melancolic and secret world. We followed another path leading back to the surface (Vote or comment on this photo)
In the "Petites Pyrénées", very close to the Menhir of Balesta and the Roman Temple at Roquefort-sur-Garonne which stay on the next hill of La Roque, you may have a view on the abandonned quarries of white marble.

They are said to have been created in the time of the Gallo-Romans. Impressive? Yes, if only... They are sadly turning to a new carreer of dumping ground... and place for mountain bike training...

Even so, the wonderful view towards the whole chain of the Pyrénées on a shiny evening is worth the effort... To get there, you should find and follow the Petite Randonnée walk towards the Orientation Table on the top of the hill.

I want to add some more informations :

Coordinates taken by GPS at 16h12 on 31 12 2018 :
Précision : 90 m
Altitude : 448 m
Longitude : 43.1405311
Latitude : 1.0284783

You can enter the carreers if you have good shoes, but be careful !

It's impressive seeing the marks of the extraction on the walls, but I regret not to be able to recognise the ancient ones from the most recent marks of dynamite holes...

I'll try and post some photos as soon as the file is created.

and a Happy New Year to all lovers of (very) old stones !

Oups !

You've already noticed I've inverted latitude and longitude : sorry !

The complete name is in french "Carrières Souterraines du Pédégas"
or in english :
"Gallo-romans Underground Careers of Pedegas"

They actually deserve an inscription as "Petit Patrimoine" with the number :
31059_1.
