Book Cliffs is the longest continuous escarpment in the world. The cliff face runs for 250 miles and is up to 1000 feet high. Among the countless clefs and side passages are many examples of rock art left by prehistoric peoples of multiple cultures and time periods.

The cliffs are so extensive that they lie in three different Utah counties: Emery, Grand, and Uintah. The location given here is for the "Book Cliffs Natural Area" in Uintah County. This area falls under the Vernal Field Office of BLM, and is considered an outstanding natural environment. In Oct/Nov 2006 this area made news in an investigation of vandalism of a rare Barrier Canyon style of Pictographs.

Note: See the the most recent comment on efforts to prevent further opening of this area to development. Another example of environmental conservation assisting the preservation of archaeological sites.

"Environmentalists have won another round in challenging a series of Bureau of Land Management oil and gas lease sales in Utah.
The Interior Department's Board of Land Appeals this week reversed the BLM's leasing of roughly 14,000 acres for energy development north of Nine Mile Canyon and just south of the Book Cliffs in central Utah. The leases, covering 16 parcels, have been suspended, effective immediately."

Utah rock art vandals turn themselves in.

Vernal, Utah—November 1, 2006—Two men from the Wasatch front came forward October 30 and admitted to vandalizing a rare rock art site located in the southern part of the public lands managed by the Vernal Field Office. They admitted to partially defacing the rock art, so additional damage to the panel is still left to investigate.

Vandals defaced an ancient rock art panel near Vernal, Utah, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) said October 26th. "They engraved names and dates" across a rock art panel, said Blaine Phillips, a BLM archaeologist. "They pretty well destroyed it."

The panel was one of four examples of the Barrier Canyon-style of rock art found in the Vernal area. Experts believe the rock art dates back several thousand years, though little is known about the early American Indians who created the images. The style includes ghostly-looking human-sized figures with no legs.


"It's not unlike walking into an art gallery and painting your name across a Van Gogh," said State Archaeologist Kevin Jones. "It defaces a piece of our cultural heritage that is irreplaceable."


Phillips said an employee performing a routine check noticed the recent act of vandalism.
